Dialectical Behavior Therapy

Serving Adults & Teens

Water

An intensive, rigorous, and comprehensive form of therapy, the DBT program at Three Waves Psychotherapy includes weekly individual therapy sessions, weekly DBT Skills Group training, and phone coaching as needed in between sessions to help remain skillful and supported.

The overarching mission of Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT) is to build a life worth living as only we are able to define it. To do so, DBT shows how to safely weather strong emotions, high-risk urges, and life-threatening behaviors without making situations worse. DBT concentrates on managing emotions more effectively, including how to encourage the more enjoyable feelings and regulate the less desired ones. With non-judgmental, present moment awareness at its foundation, DBT fortifies the ability to participate fully in life and strengthen meaningful relationships...while maintaining our self-respect through it all.

DBT operates from the understanding that everyone is doing the best they can with what they have available to them, while also embracing that nothing changes in life unless something changes. DBT acknowledges that we all want to live in peace and though we may not be responsible for some of the causes of pain that we experience, it is still our responsibility to do what is needed to resolve the aftermath so we no longer suffer.

At its heart, DBT helps to fill in the gaps of life skills that may never have been learned. Originally created for the treatment of Borderline Personality Disorder, DBT has decades-backed research supporting its efficacy with:

  • Posttraumatic Stress Disorder

  • Eating Disorders (including Anorexia, Binge Eating, and Bulimia)

  • Substance Use Concerns

  • Anxiety (including Generalized Anxiety, Social Anxiety, and Panic Disorder)

  • Major Depressive Disorder
